ERCP
ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is an advanced procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas.
It combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to locate blockages, stones, or narrowing in these ducts and allows doctors to treat them during the same procedure.
ERCP is not just a test — it is a therapeutic procedure that can relieve symptoms and prevent serious complications.
Why is a ERCP Done?
ERCP is usually recommended when there is a suspected blockage or problem in the bile or pancreatic ducts.
Common reasons include:
• Gallstones stuck in the bile duct
• Obstructive jaundice (yellowing of eyes/skin)
• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
• Bile duct narrowing (strictures)
• Tumors in bile duct or pancreas
• Persistent abdominal pain with abnormal scans
• Bile leakage after surgery
What Conditions Can ERCP Detect?
ERCP is commonly used to treat:
• Bile duct stones (choledocholithiasis)
• Blocked bile ducts
• Pancreatic duct obstruction
• Jaundice due to obstruction
• Bile duct infections
• Tumors affecting bile or pancreatic ducts
• Post-surgical bile leaks
What Happens During a ERCP?
During the procedure:
• A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth into the small intestine
• A contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts
• X-ray imaging is used to visualize blockages or abnormalities
• If needed, treatment is done immediately:
- Removal of stones
- Placement of stents
- Opening of blocked ducts
The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
ERCP Preparation
6-8 hours Before Procedure
• Avoid water, tea, coffee, and chewing gum
Day Before Procedure
• Avoid oily, spicy, and heavy foods
On the Day of Procedure
• Carry your medical reports and test results
Recovery After ERCP
Recovery depends on the complexity of the procedure.
After ERCP:
• You may be observed for a few hours or overnight
• Mild discomfort or bloating is common
• Diet is gradually resumed as advised
• Most patients recover within 1–2 days
